The Western Cape Mobility Department hosted its first Freight Focus Month this August, highlighting the people, systems and initiatives that keep goods moving across the province. Throughout the month, stakeholders explored key freight themes, including industry collaboration, road freight infrastructure and safety, rail revitalisation, port efficiency, and the growing role of technology and skills development.
Events during the month ranged from celebrating women in freight, health interventions for drivers, site visits to farms, industrial plants and driver training schools, to high-level discussions about modal shifts, rail-freight potential and future planning. The campaign made visible the often-invisible work that underlies every delivery, export, and supply chain, from farm to shelf, factory to port.

The campaign made the often-unseen work of freight more visible by showing how every delivery, export and construction supply depends on a reliable transport network. Freight Focus Month concluded on 29 August 2025 with the Western Cape Freight Forum, where government, industry and community partners came together to reflect on progress, share insights and strengthen relationships across the freight industry.
By the end of August, the Western Cape Freight Forum brought together government, business and community partners to reflect on progress, share insights, and strengthen relationships across the freight sector. The Department signalled that Freight Focus is not a one-off event, but the beginning of a sustained effort to modernise, recognise and support freight as a backbone of the province’s economy.
